Advantages of using the
S-RUN-R Read/Study System
I
like the concept of the S-RUN-R read/study system because you are
using five concise steps to enhance your learning and comprehension
abilities.
When
you survey a chapter, it allows you to get an idea of concepts you
will explore while working in that chapter. If you pay attention to
headings, and subjects that are highlighted you are preparing
yourself to receive that information before you get to it. Rather
than wondering what comes next, it gives you a sense of anticipation
of knowing what will come next. I have begun to apply this to my
course of study. If I quickly go through and check headings and
subheadings, the summary and review questions, that information
stands out to me as I begin to read.
As I
read I am finding that I am paying more attention to the topic being
discussed if I do write the headings down in my notes It makes me
think about what I am reading and the information conveyed. I have a
better understanding of what I am reading. Learning these different
approaches has made me wish that I had been introduced to them years
ago. I was taught different learning approaches, though nothing as
concise as what I am learning now.
Underlining or highlighting the important information in each
paragraph just reinforces my retention. My preference is
highlighting in yellow.
Once
I have completed the above steps I go back and write my notes. Since
I have highlighted I am immediately drawn back to the important
information.
The
last step the S-RUN-R System incorporates is to review. It is
helping me become much better with reviewing the material. I am also
taking advantage of the review material at the end of the chapter.
