CIS1200 Learning Experiences

It is Sunday evening.  I have my tasks accomplished and it is not yet midnight.  I am learning so much in this class.  My computer skills are getting better and I have more confidence when using the computer.  I am slow and  I have to redo many times, however, I have not thrown the mouse or banged the keyboard since I started.  I am learning study systems that are very helpful and other techniques that I have not been introduced to before.  My youngest daughter has advised me that these did not exist when I was in school before.  It has been a few years.  I am also benefiting from conversing with other people in this class.  I like to read their comments and I'm beginning to feel like I know them.
This week I am going to try and do some of my reading at school/work.  I may not be able to do much but I think it will help if I can start.  I am taking my Van Blerkom book tomorrow.

On my honor as a, I pledge that I have neither given nor received any unauthorized aid on this assignment.”

Plagiarism Lines Blur for Students in Digital Age

By: Trip Gabriel

I. Many students do not understand that using information from the internet, without listing the source is plagiarism.

A. A Rhode Island College freshman cut & pasted information from the internet
regarding homelessness and did not give credit because no author was listed.

B. A student at DePaul University lifted several pages from the web without
giving credit.

  1. A student at the University of Maryland did not give credit for information he
used from Wikipedia regarding the Great Depression because he felt the information was deemed as common knowledge.

II. Opinions from some educators regarding why students are less able to distinguish
what plagiarism is.

A. Writing tutors and officials at the three schools mentioned suggest that many
students do not understand that the use of someone else’s words is plagiarism.

  1. It is felt that there is a disconnect with the concept of intellectual property,
copyright and originality and is being dismissed because of the growing use of information that is exchanged on the internet.

  1. Recent surveys reflect that the number of students who believe that copying
from the web is the same as cheating is declining.

III. Individuality and originality are increasingly less important to the upcoming
generation.

Opinions from some educators regarding why students are less able to distinguish what Plagiarism is.

A. Sara Brookover, a senior at the Rutgers campus in Camden, New Jersey said
many of her classmates blithely cut and paste without attribution.

B. Susan D. Blum, a University of Notre Dame anthropologist, has researched
this phenomenon and contends “undergraduates are less interested in
cultivating a unique and authentic identity – as their 1960 counterparts were –
than in trying on many different personas, which the web enables with social
networking.”

C. Helene Hegeman, a German teenager, wrote a best-selling novel with included
passages lifted from others. She defended her actions saying “there’s no such
thing as originality anyway, just authenticity.”

IV. Plagiarism – lack of understanding or lack of incentive

A. Sara Wilensky, a senior at Indiana University contends that “Plagiarism has
nothing to do with trendy academic theories. The main reason it occurs is
because students leave high school unprepared for the intellectual rigors of
college writing.”

B. David J. Dudley, who oversees the discipline office at the University Of
California, Davis, was referencing 196 episodes of plagiarism the year before,
when he said “many times it was students who intentionally copied – knowing
it was wrong – who were unwilling to engage the writing process.”

C. Another case that came through Mr. Dudley’s office had nothing to do with a
younger generation’s view of authorship. The father of a student accused of
plagiarism admitted that he was the one responsible for the plagiarism.

Advantages of using the S-RUN-R Read/Study System

I like the concept of the S-RUN-R read/study system because you are using five concise steps to enhance your learning and comprehension abilities.
When you survey a chapter, it allows you to get an idea of concepts you will explore while working in that chapter. If you pay attention to headings, and subjects that are highlighted you are preparing yourself to receive that information before you get to it. Rather than wondering what comes next, it gives you a sense of anticipation of knowing what will come next. I have begun to apply this to my course of study. If I quickly go through and check headings and subheadings, the summary and review questions, that information stands out to me as I begin to read.
As I read I am finding that I am paying more attention to the topic being discussed if I do write the headings down in my notes It makes me think about what I am reading and the information conveyed. I have a better understanding of what I am reading. Learning these different approaches has made me wish that I had been introduced to them years ago. I was taught different learning approaches, though nothing as concise as what I am learning now.
Underlining or highlighting the important information in each paragraph just reinforces my retention. My preference is highlighting in yellow.
Once I have completed the above steps I go back and write my notes. Since I have highlighted I am immediately drawn back to the important information.
The last step the S-RUN-R System incorporates is to review. It is helping me become much better with reviewing the material. I am also taking advantage of the review material at the end of the chapter.

My experiences with CIS1200

I like the experience of online learning.  I am especially happy with my improvement in the use of my computer and learning how to use the functions available.  I have learned what type of learner that I am predominately.  This is allowing me to learn more effectively.  The habits that I have adopted are also helping immensely.

This is my first introduction to blogs, but I personally am not interested in expanding my knowledge of and experience with blogging beyond what is required for this course as I cannot envision my ever using the medium except in any course requirement.  Due to personal circumstances I am very security conscious and do not even maintain a presence in any of the social media sites.

After setting this blog up, I took a few minutes and browsed several blogs, however, unless you have a business or other type of product presence needing some sort of inexpensive web presence, personal blogs seem to just be electronic versions of diaries/journals.

Setting up this blog required that the maker set up a gmail address  in Google
